With the increasing popularity of magnetic track lighting in the market, many customers often wonder how long can a magnetic track light be. Let’s analyze this issue.
First of all, I need to make it clear that since there is no unified standard for magnetic track lighting in the market, this analysis is only based on Topsund lighting’s products
1. The material of conductive copper strip
The diameter and material of the copper bars on both sides of the track affect the price of the product and how long can the magnetic track light be. Take the example of Topsund magnetic track light, it is designed with a diameter of 2.2mm 3.8mm2 red copper with a resistivity of 0.018Ω·baimm2/m, similar to silver. so there is no limilation on the length of the magnetic track you can connect.
2. The driver solution of magnetic light fixture
There are two solutions for the driver in the market, one is constant voltage driver, just like the DC24V LED strip. don’t recommend this way. another is constant current driver as below:
This driver will be installed in the magnetic adapter of every light fixture.
even though the voltage of the track rail is only 40V or 38V. the light fixture is also can be working properly. but if the track voltage is lower than 36V DC, some light fixtures will not be on. thus, all the lamps will be same brightness with this driver solution even if there is the voltage-drop in the magnetic track.
3. The rated watt of the driver to run the track
As we know, this magnetic track rail is a low voltage track system. it is necessary to use a driver (AC To DC48V) to run the whole track. if we really connect all the tracks in one series and use the max driver 1000w in the markets, so the max current is 1000/48=20.8amp, overload the track 16amp. however, the voltage of the end track will be lower than 36V DC, which will result in some lights will be not workable.
So taking into account the above factors, we advice you to connect 100m track in one series for DC48V, and 50m for DC24V. if exceed this length, you consider using two drive to separately run the track.
